About Alpacas

The Alpaca is a remarkable breed. Orginating in South America, specifically in Bolivia, Chile and Peru, these animals are rapidly gaining in popularity throughout the world as a livestock breeding animal. Frequently referred to as, "The World's Finest Livestock Investment," alpacas are raised for their wonderful fleece. Currently there are approximately 30,000 alpacas in the United States and the demand for them has increased dramatically every year since their arrival in 1983 from South America. Due to the strong interest in alpacas and the limited number available outside of South America, there currently exists an excellent breeding market opportunity in the United States. Below are excerpts from the AOBA 1999 Breeder's Guide article: Financial Aspects of Alpaca Ownership.
